What to pack, what to memorise, and the practical things nobody tells you about your first journey to Makkah.
Your first Umrah is not complicated, but it is easier when you have thought through the practical side in advance. This is the checklist we give every first-time pilgrim.
Learn the sequence before you leave. Ihram, talbiyah, tawaf, sa'i, and then halq or taqsir. You do not need to memorise long supplications — sincere du'a in your own language is accepted — but knowing the order means you will not feel lost on arrival.
Pack light and pack sensibly. Two sets of ihram for men, comfortable sandals you can slip off easily, unscented soap and toothpaste, a small bag for your shoes inside the Haram, and any regular medication in its original packaging with a prescription.
Prepare physically. Most pilgrims underestimate how much walking is involved — tawaf and sa'i together can be five kilometres, often on top of a walk to the Haram five times a day. Walking regularly for a few weeks beforehand makes a real difference, particularly for older travellers.
Finally, keep expectations realistic. The Haram is crowded, the weather is hot, and things will not always run to schedule. The pilgrims who return most content are usually the ones who arrived expecting some difficulty and treated it as part of the journey.
